herbs

The North American Organic Brewers Festival is upon us this beer event laden weekend. One thing I’ve noticed looking at the beer list is the number of beers with different herbs in them. The trend in craft brewing right now seems to be towards barrel aging beers, but I’ve noticed a trend towards herbal beers here in the northwest, and to a much lesser extent around the nation. Could herbal beers be the next big thing?

Personally I love  the aroma, and to a much lesser degree the flavor, that herbs other then hops impart to beer. I’ve used both yarrow and bogmyrtle a couple times. So I find myself wondering why the trend?

I think part of it is the novelty value to the consumer, and an interest for the brewer in stretching their horizons. I think it’s one of the reasons oak aging has exploded. To the average non brewing public the idea of barrel aging, boiling with hot rocks, or adding dandelion flowers is something way out there. There is a big draw in trying unique or unusual beers for the beer snob crowd.

As a brewer I’m interested in the techniques from a non novelty stand point. What can these different ingredients and methods do to change the characteristics of my beer? Are they effective? It’s the same curiosity that caused me to dump peanut butter in a stout. It’s also the same curiosity that caused me to develope my recipe for a gooseberry yarrow saison that I’m brewing this weekend.

So am I full of it about these fads and trends? I’d like to know others opinions. I’d especialy like Soseman’s input since she works in marketing.

Get Free Stuff

Sunday I let you guys know that I had some cool Deschutes posters to give away and asked for some ideas. So far I have gotten no love in the comments. I know it’s only Tuesday, but still….. Actually I shouldn’t say no one has given me ideas. Ryan from EverydayQB thought it might be fun if I asked people to send in videos of themselves and gave everyone who submitted a video a poster. How does this sound to you guys?

If I do offer up one of these lovely posters would you guys be willing to send an a video of you and your friends/spouse/just yourself having a beer? The videos would be turned into a little amalgamation video of people who read this blog celebrating good times and great beer. I really like this idea, but want input from you to make sure it’s something I should run with.

Sorry for the late update

So IPA appears to be the next beer I am making. This should be interesting since it’s one of my least favorite styles…. I take that back. A Northwest IPA is one of my least favorite. I have had some good IPA’s that didn’t make your face contort from bitterness. So now that we’ve narrowed it to style here are the options. Sometime next week I will tally the votes and develop a recipe. For people who don’t know what to vote for go with the Gooseberry ;)

Honey Wheat IPA
Irish IPA (an IPA crossed with an Irish Red)
Gooseberry & Yarrow IPA (my personal choice)
Oak aged Bourban IPA (not sure if this will work, but sounds good)

Choose My Next Beer

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

career20choice202I’ve decided I enjoy leaving my brewing schedule up to you guys once in awhile. But true to form I need to put my own spin on things. So I’ve decided to let people vote on a style for me to brew using the comments, and then once style is down I will toss out some beers in that style for you to choose from. So here are your style choices.

I have kept the number of choices low to force some kind of consensus

Amber Ale
Barleywine
Brown Ale
IPA
Stout
Wheat
Rye

To vote for a style just let me leave a comment on this post with your vote.

As I’ve hinted at in another post there may be a new beer festival coming to Oregon, and it will be located right in our capitol. Mission Mill Museum, Capitol Brewers, and others are all in the process of trying to make this thing happen. If it gets off the ground then they’re aiming for September at the Mission Mill Museum. So far I know Seven Brides has been officially approached, and others probably have also. It will be great to finally have a beer festival in our own backyard. From my research I think I’m the first one to break this online, so it’s hard finding details. As they become available though I’ll post updates. If anyone has any information send me an email at theweeklybrew@live.com

A Question For The Readers

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Awhile back, while talking with another homebrewer, I heard that the Oregon Department of Agriculture had a farm where they developed hop hybrids. The guy I was talking to told me that not only told me such a place exixsted, but that they gave hops and or rhizomes to people so that they could gather information on the new hybrids.

So here is my question,

Does such a farm exist? Do they really give hops away? Do they charge? and lastly, how do I get ahold of them?
