Being Honest About An Honest Pint

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

large_honestpintI hadn’t weighed in on this issue despite the news coverage it’s gotten simply because it’s been covered fairly well already. The problem is most of the coverage has been positive.

Back when I found Jeff Alworth  had started an “Honest Pint Project” at beervana I was strongly in favor of it. Jeff had an idea whereby bars would be encouraged to serve an honest 16oz pint thanks to a locally supported project. As I understood it bars, teverns, pubs, and breweries could sign up, show they were honest, and receive a sticker and some promotion by joining. Then all the local beer drinkers would know that these places with a sticker supported the locals by giving them what they paid for. Somewhere along the line though this was turned into a political issue and now I hate it.

Jules Bailey from Portland apparently awoke one day and realized this could help his political career. After all, why else would a lawmaker take a local cause, turn it into a law, and not even add penalties for people violating the law? Lawmaker after lawmaker gave touching comments about protecting the consumer. So what does this law entail that makes it better then Jeff’s community project? Well first it passes a law saying people can voluntarily serve you a full 16oz pint, but they don’t have to. If you want to obey the new law then the (overburdened as the Oregonian put it) OLCC will come out and check your glasses and, if you pass muster, give you a neat sticker to put on your door or window. So how is this bill any different from the initial “Honest Pint Project”? Well it’s different because instead of it being supported by the beer drinkers and bars themselves it will be funded by you the taxpayer, weather you drink or not.

Is this really something Oregon should be discussing in any economic climate, let alone one where everyone is claiming they don’t have enough funding? Is missing 2oz out of your glass really worth passing a law over? For crying out loud people the law is voluntary. If the bar you’re currently going too wants to use cheater pints they will. Will anyone out there honestly stop patronizing a bar without a sticker? While we’re at it why not ask ourselves when the stupidity will end? When bars are certified, but still use cheater pints will we blackball them? Or will we pass a law about that? What about when some smart bar owner makes his own copy of an honest pint sticker and throws it on his window? Will we make a law about that? Will we eventually end up like Europe where they tell you what size of glasses you have to buy?

I hereby ask Jeff Alworth, and everyone who supports their local pubs, to start another community initiative on top of the OLCC’s. Give bar owners an incentive to join with a website or something that will give them publicity and allow them to buy into it. Create a movement that shows Oregonians can get things done without passing a law!

84-lrgThe Contest

Seniõr Paul has come through in spades and has gotten a Mr. Beer to give away on this blog. For those unfamiliar with Mr. Beer check this google page for it out Mr. Beer Premium Edition Home Microbrewery System. Mr. Beer is a great way to get into brewing without the cost or research. It comes with a small fermentor, a kit with I believe pre hopped malt extract, yeast, and bottles that don’t require a capping system. While this doesn’t offer the variation and control of the beers you can make with a proper brewing setup it still can make fairly passable, and even good beers depending on the kit. I know passable isn’t what a beer snob would prefer most of the time, but hey, it’s free, and it’s made by yourself. Anything as cool as that?

The Details

Now we get to the details. The contest starts today, and will continue until May 23rd. Why May 23rd? Well I want as many people to enter within a reasonable time as is possible. Well it also is my birthday, and it’d be cool to give it away then. So how do you enter? Well I’m going to take a page out of Ryan’s blog at Porsche Perfect. For those who don’t know about it Ryan is giving away an actual Porsche on his blog. Here’s the link http://www.porscheperfect.com/porsche-giveaway. Ryan has multiple ways to enter his drawing, and I think it’d be cool to do things that way. Here’s the catch though. I won’t give away all the ways at once. In order to find out you’ll have to check back. Also in case common sense isn’t your forte then just know you can’t win if you are not over 21, or of legal drinking age. I may not be giving away beer, but use your sense God gave you.

The Way In

This weeks way in is so simple a high schooler could win, if they were allowed to participate. All you have to do is leave a relative comment on any of my posts. Every relevant comment you make will get one entry into the drawing. Im probably leaving something out, but I’m writing this on Tuesday night, to post on Wednesday, and I’m tired. Oh yeah, if you get a chance check out Paul’s blog and get to know him at pacificpedaling. Paul is an awesome man who I’ve known since middle school.

Upcoming Events

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

liftarn_large_barrelI am ashamed to admit that I have never been to one of Oregons beer festivals, and I’ve lived here all my life. It’s sad really. To be honost prior to this year I didn’t even know there were any festivals outside of Octoberfest and the one at Riverfront Park. However, thanks to the education provided by writing this blog, my friends, and my Uncle Tom I will attend multiple festivals this year. Here’s a list of festivals coming up in April.

Oregon Spring Beer and Wine Festival

This is the big one in April for me, and one of the festivals I will attend. That reminds me, I need to get the day off for it…. This is the festivals 15th year, and supposedly there will be 90+ beers to sample, plus wine, mead, spirits, cheese, artisan chocolate, and probably whatever else they can get in the building . The event is noon – 11:00 on the 10th and 11th at the Oregon Convention Center. Check out their website for more info

Oregon Gardens Brewfest

The Oregon Gardens Brewfest is in the J. Frank Schmidt, Jr. Pavilion on April 25th and 26th. There will be beer sampling, food, live music, and a Homebrew Compitition. The cost is $15 and $5 parking. I’m still not certain about wether I should go to this one. In order to go I’d have to take another day off, and two beer festivals in one month might be a bit to much. So if you happen to be heading out to Silverton that weekend, or you have a free day then head down. For more info on this event check out their website.

Hair Of The Dog Earth Day Sale

I have never tried any beers from Hair of the Dog, but a big beer sale bonanza is good news in my book. The sale is on April 25 starting at 10 am and ending at 4 pm at their brewery. For all you greenies out there this would be a good bet for you since Hair of the Dog has gone organic.

Weekend Events

pintonbar1As most everyone knows St Patricks Day is coming up on Tuesday, the revelries though will start today for many people. Don’t be sad if you can’t make it to Ireland for the fun though as there’s plenty to do here in Oregon. So as Al Roker always says, “Here’s what’s going on in your neck of the woods.” I’ve always wanted to use that in a post :)

Perhaps the biggest event we have here is the Kell’s Irish Festival in Portland. Today at 5:00 pm they will kick off their 19th year of celebrating St Patrick’s in Portland. On Saturday the tent out back opens up, and the real festivities begin. People who swing by will be treated to the sounds of bagpipes, live music, and get to watch the Maher World-Champion Irish dancers.  The tent opens to minors from 11:30 am – 5:00 pm, and there’s no cover charge until 6 when ZOO2 plays. The following day Everclear will be playing, with a $20 cover, and Zoo2 will be giving a free concert on Monday. Tuesday however is when the real festivities start. There will be performances by ZOO2 (notice a theme?), Needfire, The Real Shindig, and others. I have no clue what the cover is for Tuesday, but it certainly sounds like the time to go. If you can’t make it to Portland, or a crowded tent full of drunk concert goers isn’t your thing there will be plenty of other events around Oregon. Eugene’s Sheldon High School is holding it’s 32nd Run for the Shamrock at Alton Baker Park, and all proceeds go to the schools track program. Portland also has it’s own Shamrock Run at Waterfront Park. Also you can always swing by the closest Irish pub and have a pint. If your looking for one here’s a list to choose from. If your in Salem where there are no Irish pubs try McMinnimans or Porters.

Kell’s Irish Pub- Portland
Pady’s Bar and Grill- Portland
4 Daughters Irish Pub- Medford (good beer selection)
Nana’s Irish Pub – Newport
New Old Lompoc – Portland
Paddy Brannan’s Irish Pub – Ashland
O’Donnels Irish Pub – Eugene

Beer News II

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

newspaperIn case you have a hard time staying up on the news from the front lines here’s a rundown of some interesting beer news.

Stimulus for Beer
H.R. 836

A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives that would repeal the nations beer tax to the pre 1991 level of $9 a barrel instead of $18. Although this is a small decrease it is still a victory for the beer industry considering that almost %40 of what you pay at the store for beer is taxes from various levels. As usual though this bill would treat Micro Brewers differently then it would the big corporate brewers. Micro Brewers would get a cut from $7 to $3.50 a barrel. Some day we need to realize beer is beer, and that when we chip away at the big brewers we are only hurting ourselves.

Utah may legalize homebrew
H.B. 51

Utah is one of only five states where it is illegal to brew your own beer. But that all may be changing soon. H.B. 51 is set to go up for a senate vote. If it passes then there will be only four states left to conquer.

What the Future Holds

Last beer news post I made I talked about Oregon’s attempts to increase the beer tax. After doing some forum crawling I was surprised at the support this tax is getting. Many people apparently blame beer over wine or spirits for encouraging alcohol addiction. I’ve never understood why people seem to get more fired up about increases on wine and liquor then about an increase on beer and malt drinks, the beverages with a much lower alcohol content. Anyways, if you think that beer taxes won’t really hurt anyone, and that the tax money raised can be a good thing check this article out.

I get alot of my information about what’s going on from these sites. If your interested give them a look. Of course you could always just type beer news into google also.

Beer News

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Before I start what looks to be a serious post I want to share something with you. A week or two ago when the Sam Adams scandal was still in the news I ran across this image from destonio.net

samadamsporter

With this recession going on alot of the beer news revolves around declining sales for the big brewers of urine cheap beer, and Oregon’s ridiculous 1900% tax increase on beer. In fact these stories have so dominated Oregon’s beer industry that no one noticed that Kid Rock is jumping on the micro brew band wagon with his own beer. I want to do what everyone else is doing though and focus on the taxes. What does a 1900% tax increase look like? well broken down to it’s smallest serving size it comes out to a 15¢ tax on a 12oz bottle of beer, rather then the less than a penny tax we have right now. Add that back up though, and it amounts to $50 in taxes on a barrel of beer, right now the tax is $2.60.  According to Kurt Widmer of Widmer Brothers Brewing this will raise your $4 pint to $5.50. Oregon has a far richer history with the micro brew industry than most states, and many brewers fear that adding such a big load on the industry all at once may force the micro brewers to start cutting jobs in order to cut costs, cut back distribution, and may even put small brew pubs out of business. Now what are the chances of this passing? Well they are pretty slim. Historically Oregon doesn’t like beer taxes, but the fact that every year these politicians put it out there, and every year we say no, says something about how well they listen to us.

I made some Welsh Rabbit today using my spoiled beer, I’ll tell ya tomorrow how it tasted
