Hot Town, Summer In The City

It looks like we may get halfway decent weather for Summer In The City music fest after all. With the clouds looming over the last couple days I was starting to wonder. The forecastthough is calling for partly sunny with temps in the high 70′s to low 80′s this weekend.

I’m still not sure how I feel about summer in the city. I’ve never been a huge festival goer. Also, the more I look at it the more I wonder why they bill it as a music and wine festival. Sure they have something like 21+ wine vendors, but they also have a car show (at Riverfront Park), Texas Hold ‘em tournament, sidewalk sales, and beer pong. Seriously, beer pong?? Sounds more like a carnival to me minus the rides (there will be some bouncy houses for the little ones). No fear though, I’m sure those will be listed as a feature in a couple years. Maybe it’ll look like 4th of July in Independence eventually :)

Mostly I want to go so I can spend a nice relaxing day listening to some music, maybe swing by the craft beer tent that Venti’s is helping put on. Really that’s all I see as highlights. Problem is I work Saturday and 2 out of 3 of my coworkers are both busy that day. The other just got done covering everyone’s shifts the last two days (except mine) and will be covering shifts for another one my coworkers till Wednesday plus doing their own. I feel almost mean just thinking about asking them to cover my shift Saturday.

For those going the festival, it is at the intersection of Liberty and Court. Entrance is $10 for Saturday, $7.50 for Sunday, and $15 for a 2 day pass. There is a free zone within the fest, but there are also three pavilions. These are the beer pavilion, the wine pavilion, and Hornitos Garden of Agave. Not sure if Hornitoswill be worth visiting though. For more info on what’s going on, and a list of wineries, artists, and food check out the website http://www.gosummerinthecity.info/index.htm

JR gave me an updated taplist, I’ve posted it at the bottom

logositcJR has made sure it’s no secret that Venti’s has some Burghead Heather Ale from Roots waiting to be tapped, and I’ve made it no secret that I will visit said keg when it is tapped. However JR has informed me that Thane is holding back on tapping it. for more specifics on Venti’s involvement check out their blog.

Here’s the email I received from JR

Bad news, good news.
Venti’s Cafe, in conjunction with Maletis Beverage, Portland, is operating the Craft Beer Pavilion

during the 2009 Salem ‘Summer in the City Music & Wine Festival’.

Bad News first:

Burghead Heather Ale is not on offer at Venti’s Cafe.
Thane continues to hold the 1/6 barrel of RootsO ‘Burghead Heather Ale’ in reserve
hedging against a short fall by a beer distributor; Columbia, General, Maletis, Mountain People

Good News, at last:

Allegedly, there will be an inexhaustible supply.

Saturday night I hit Venti’s for a few pints and some pomme frites (French for fries). By the way, if you do get into Venti’s try the Raven Eye Imperial Stout. Anyway, one pint in and a guy came and sat next to me. Turns out it was Andy Barber, a guy I went to highschool with that abandoned Salem for P-Town. We caught up a bit and then ended up chatting with the girl on my right. Turns out she is a server at Thompson’s Brewery and has served me both there and at Boon’s. Then apparently another guy that graduated the same year as Andy and I was there. This was becoming a very interesting evening. I mean seriously, I’m not very social at bars, and I don’t often talk to people I who I’m not there with. Oh, and did I mention Bobby Hooper was bartending? Bobby is an awesome guy, as well as an awesome bartender.

Of course as always happens I ended up discussing beer with people. I blame Bobby for asking about the difference between a stout and a porter. Turns out Andy likes good beer too and got in on the convo, and of course the lady from Thompsons (sorry, I don’t remember your name) gave a little input as well. Later we were joined by a guy that had recently moved here from New York and was involved with their reservoir system there. Of course, I asked him about Widmer and their complaints about the Bull Run filter plan. By this point I was on pint 3, a nice blonde bock. Oh, forgot to say what number 2 was. Number 2 was a Belgian dark. We talked about treatment plans and effects on water chemistry. I really am a geek.

This kind of evening is why local pubs need our support. How many places can you have an evening like this at? By the way, Venti’s is switching to true pint’s. Wether these will be actual pint glasses and not just pint sized shakers I know not. Maybe J.R. will have more info since he’s got family ties. So get out and support your local watering hole this week.

Venti’s 1 Year

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

vtweetSo today is Venti’s one year anniversary, and I’m sitting herewith Bill having lunch. Sadly I will miss the tapping of Damnation. Turns out they won’t tap the keg until 4:00 pm. They do have Ninkasi’s Radient summer ale in bottles, as well as Rogues Sesquicentennial ale. Total lunch was only $15 for two people. Not bad with the bomber of Ninkasi. Not many people seemed to realize it was the anniversary. There is also Venti family everywhere. In fact once Venti’s updates their blog I got a photo of me sitting and typing, with JR, Leslie, and Dino posing with me. I feel so lazy when I think about the fact I’m the only one sitting in that photo.

I’m excited that it’s one year for Venti’s at their new location, and that they’re doing well. I’ve known Conrad since highschool, so even though I’m not family I’m still excited for their continued success. I think part of this is also because Venti’s is personal and cares about their customers. Not only that, but as I’ve discovered over the last year they have great beer. Boy do they have great beer.

I hope you guys stop by and enjoy the offerings Venti has for what is a special day for them. I know I enjoyed myself even if Damnation wasn’t tapped yet :) It was great seeing Leslie, Dino, and JR, and we really enjoyed our lunch.

Another Venti’s Update

Monday, July 6th, 2009

JR left this comment on my last Venti’s post. Thanks for the update JR

Mr. Weekly, aka, Jared,

Further evolution regarding Venti’s 07 July 2009 Anniversary Celebration.

Rogue Sesquicentennial Ale is not available in kegs.
So, Thane, Venti’s most competent bar manager and extraordinary beer man, has purchased
- a 12 bottle case of 22 oz bottles
- a 24 bottle case of 12 oz bottle
of Rogue Sesquicentennial Ale. These are offered at a special price until the stock is depleted.

The Special Anniversary Day Special, based on loyal customer request and product availability, is a keg of Russian River’s Damnation, Belgium Style Strong Golden Ale, offered at a special price until the stock is depleted, the keg is ‘blow’.

Clever man that you are . . . you will notice that Russian River is a Santa Rosa, California, brewer; seemingly, inappropriate for the stated joint celebration of Venti’s anniversary, Oregon Craft Beer Month, and State of Oregon Sesquicentennial.

However, Rouge Sesquicentennial Ale and 4 taps will satisfy the recognition of Oregon and Mr. Chocholak, Thane, stands by the celebratory merit of Russian River’s Damnation.

Ask And Recieve

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

vtweetWednesday I let you guys all know some of the details about Venti’s 1 year anniversary at their new location (why do we still call it the new location after a year?) When I posted the details I somewhat jokingly had said that I had been hoping for

some great tap prices, or an extra special keg

Turns out Leslie read this line as I got a Facebook message letting me know that the event was still evolving, yet there were no plans for a special keg, but all drinks would be happy hour prices from 4-11. Cool I thought. There is always great beer on tap so happy hour prices sounds great. Then I got another email.

Here is where the ask and ye shall receive part comes in. Leslie had asked for my email address, and not to long after giving it to her this showed up

Happy hour prices on pints $3 all day, but happy hour on mixed drinks only after 4 when lounge opens

Gettin a keg of Rogue Sesquicentennial Ale

Talk about awesome. Venti’s has definitely gone above and beyond. Not only that but because of that email I now feel all powerful. What a nice feeling.

So now that Venti’s has gone out of their way to make this celebration worthy of being listed in the craft beer month event list we must do our part. Get the word out there. Three dollar pints is an unusual thing to see for beer of the caliber that Venti’s serves. So not only will you get an awesome price on a pint, but you will be supporting a great local restaurant. See you all on July 7th hopefully.

Oregon Craft Beer Month, and Happenings Around Salem

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

These were supposed to be two separate posts with todays celebrating the start of Oregon Craft Beer Month and tomorrow talking about the many events in Salem, but since CapitolTaps pre-emptively struck on the Salem front I am combining to save face.

large_craftbeermonthlogo

Oregon Craft Beer Month

As I’ve already stated today is the launch of Oregon Craft Beer Month. This means instead of about 2 or 3 beer events per a week around the state we have gone to several per a day. Exciting eh? Problem is about 90% of the events seem to be in Portland. There is no reason why they shouldn’t either. Portland more then any other city in Oregon takes beer drinking to a new level. There are plenty of craft beer drinkers in Salem, not to mention three breweries. You’ld think Salem these breweries, as well as people that serve Oregon craft beer, would join in the celebrations. Yet outside of Bend and Portland celebrations are few and far between, and almost never advertised as well as they should be. Check out the Oregon Brewers Guild blog for a full list of events

The highlights of this month seem to be as follows

Puckerfest – Belmont Station July 10-16

I understand Belmont Station is a store/pub, and that some people won’t consider this a true festival. So instead lets consider it a celebration of  soured beers.

Portland Interenational Beer Fest – North Park Blocks July 18-19

22nd Oregon Brewers Festival – Tom McCall Waterfront Park July 23-26

Happenings In Salem

We may not have the crazy, boozy, haze filled month here in Salem, but there are some cool things goin on here.

According to CapitolTaps Pale Horse will be pouring tasters in a couple locations in Salem Check out the site for more info.

Also Venti’s is celebrating it’s first year in it’s new location. I messaged Leslie Venti hoping that there would be some great tap prices, or an extra special keg. I got no dice though. Here’s what she sent me.

Venti’s Update

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

I’ve updated the list to reflect what they have more accurately as of June 22

vtweetApparently yesterday was Venti’s solstice celebration and I missed it. Normally I don’t mind missing these things, but lately I’ve been on a tight budget, and apparently your first pint yesterday was $1. $1 pints???? Why on earth did I have to work yesterday?

So as of yesterday here are the taps at Venti’s. Please keep in mind that Venti’s does everything on rotating taps so this could be wrong.

Downstairs

Alpha Dog Imperial IPA
Black Bear XX Stout
Elysian “The Wise” ESB
Fish Tale Organic Amber

Upstairs

Tricerahops Double IPA (this one pops up alot at Venti’s it seems)
Hop Rod Rye IPA
SOB Porter
Hill Billy Blonde (who knew Pale Horse could make it into Venti’s taplist?)

The Weirdest Night

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Please keep in mind that I’m writing this at 2am after a few drinks, but I have to write it now or I won’t believe it in the morning.

getattachment

I just had the absolute weirdest night. It all started when I decided to text my friend who I will refer to as K. Anyway I hadn’t talked to K for a couple weeks and thought a couple pints at Boon’s Treasury was in order. Well it turned out K’s new roommate was having a moving in party of sorts. I had resigned myself to an evening at home by this point, but K invited me over to chill.

When I showed up there were over a dozen people I’d never met crowded around the fire pit drinking cheap flavorless beer and listening to rap. Definitely weird for this place….. Well at least the rap was. Anyway K ran upstairs for a sec and I met Eric’s (the new roommate) girl. Well K and Eric’s girl had done shots together and she was drunk. Not knowing anyone really except Eric’s woman (she was all to happy to tell you everything after those shots) we decided to walk around downtown Salem where the Cherry City Music Fest was going on while K sobered up.

Our first stop was to be Boon’s, but Boon’s was so crowded it was ridiculous, Next we headed to a place at the Reed Opera House since K knew the owner of a business there. When we got in the door we discovered that the way to the place we were trying to get to was blocked off. Not deterred we took the elevator up planning to take the stairs down, and get past the barrier. After chatting with the friendly people in the elevator we got out and found ourselves in front of the main room thing (no clue what it’s called). We heard some music inside and K decided we were going in even though the cover charge time hadn’t expired. We managed to get in without paying (really we just walked in like we were supposed to be there) and K found someone they knew, the bartender. The bartender had some stuff to do and next thing we knew we had free drinks (not including the $2 tip), and that’s all I’ll say about how that happened.

Anyway the band was awesome. The name was $1000….. Well that’s all of their name I remember. The crowd was made up of young hipsters, people who looked like they were in high school, and older men in sandals; and they were all wearing skinny jeans. K convinced me we should go out on the floor and rock out with everyone else. Really this was the most entertaining part of the night. It was like an after game high school dance all over again. These people were rocking the fist pump, hipsters mosh pit, and the head bang. In fact this one girl seemed to have a personal challenge of dancing as slutty as possible to rock music.

After the band finished playing we decided to hit Venti’s. Turns out Venti’s was fairly empty for a Friday night, and the band that was playing had had a tantrum and walked out. Disappointed we decided to head to Pete’s Place for a bite before we went back to K’s. After we had a bite to eat (and I had a couple drinks) we began the walk back to K’s. As we were walking past the new location for Salem Cinema some random guy came out of no where and convinced us we should hea to The Space because the band was good, and apparently the girl had killer legs. Ya, he was a little drunk me thinks. So since The Space was across the street, and there was no longer a cover charge we decided to stop by. Once there we listened to “Half Shark/Half Jesus” and watched three girls dance the same dance to every song. I’ll leave off the description of their groupie girls, and the way they danced since this is over 600 words already
